Variety's New Team was a European SMITE team.

History

Variety's New Team is named after, obviously, Variety. Despite accusations of Variety being an exceptional weak player throughout Season 1 and 2, and fairly average throughout Season 3, he showed signs of stronger play throughout the latter half of Season 3, especially with  Tyr and  Ymir. His improvement culminated during the 2017 SMITE World Championship when he was on Obey Alliance, showing a marked difference even from a mere month earlier during Regionals. During the World Championship, Variety solo killed Dimi, the solo laner for the reigning World Champions NRG Esports multiple times, something believed to be impossible by the general public. Despite his incredible performance, Obey Alliance did not win the World Championship, beaten by NRG Esports 3-1. The MVP award was also given to NRG Esports hunter player emilitoo, despite most of the fans agreeing that Variety should have won the award regardless of whether he won the actual championship.

Despite popular belief, Variety's New Team was not actually formed by Variety.[1] In fact, it is currently unknown whom began the formation of the then unnamed team. However, due to Variety claiming that Zyrhoes, the previous coach of NRG Esports and team mid laner, invited him to join the team, it is believed that he created the team.

With the standard "Rosterpocalypse" in the after-season, Zyrhoes had his pick of the litter. To start, the third European team that was seen as a "superteam" by fans, Orbit eSports (although they did not make the World Championship), had cracked apart, and popular members QvoFred and Trixtank joined in the jungle and support roles. Afterwards, the three picked up Arkkyl, the hunter player and lone representative for Sanguine Esports, who had previously kicked his team from Sanguine. And finally he, obviously, invited Variety to join, who quickly took to the spot.

After Variety announced the roster, Zyrhoes changed his twitter bio to "Professional Mid for Variety's New Team", and the name just stuck, though Variety found the name rather cringe worthy.

Shortly after winning the open bracket and qualifying for SPL Relegations, they were picked up by Team Dignitas, acquiring the org's spot and allowing them instant access to the SPL.
